0 Toronto Travel Discoveries Funky stores on Queen Street WestYesterday I went to do a video/photo tour of Toronto’s historic Gladstone Hotel that included an interview with owner / renovator and artist Christina Zeidler. Always curious I wanted to get a feel for the neighbourhood surrounding the hotel which is wedged in between West Queen West and Parkdale. This area is an interesting study of local history and sociology. A neighbourhood in transition, it has for many years been a lower income area with significant social problems. Today the neighbourhood is revitalizing, and new housing developments and loft conversions are going up all over the place. The grittier past now coexists with the brighter future.

Dozens of new cafes, galleries and funky boutiques have sprung up in the neighbourhood and I enjoyed a little walkaround along Queen Street West. I stopped in for lunch at Café Bernaté, a nice little lunch place almost opposite the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that features 30 sandwiches with wonderful ingredients such a French brie, avocado, artichoke hearts, asparagus – the kind of foods that make my mouth water.

On the way home I stopped off on the CNE Grounds and took some shots of the Princes’ Gates and the Automotive Buildings, two outstanding architectural examples of the Roaring Twenties. The Princes’ Gates (often mistakenly called the “Princess Gates”) were officially opened on August 31, 1927 by the two princes Edward, Prince of Wales and Prince George. Edward later became King Edward VIII. The statue at the top is called the “Goddess of Winged Victory”. Today’s statue is actually a copy made of plastic polymer since the original statue was replaced in 1987 because it had seriously deteriorated.

I also took some pictures of the entrance area of the Automotive Building which was constructed in 1929. Many typical Art Deco details adorn the entrance area of this building whose original purpose was to display the latest car models to the public. Today it is used for a wide variety of exhibitions, and the “Farm, Food and Fun” event is hosted here every year.

My quest for the hidden architectural and historical jewels of Toronto continues…..

I already have a plan as far as what I would like to carry, the style, feel, and location of the place. I’m wondering first, how do I get financing for such a venture (I will be renting the building) and second, how does one locate items to sell? In other words, if I want to find items that are local or hard to find in other places? I have no idea about how to locate products that I can sell!

First, assume there is no financing available for your venture. Because, in this time of ‘fiscal frenzy’, credit is REALLY tight. You will likely have to fund the start-up expenses from your own assets.

Products produced locally can be viewed at local small business fairs and expo’s. Contact your Chamber of Commerce for the names of members who need retailers.

For more information and further assistance go to: www.SCORE.org. There you will find MUCH information about starting a small business.

Good Luck!

I have searched online all evening and all suggestions people made in passed posts are taken. (pampered pet, petsrus, barkboutique, petparadise…) Help please

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route…

Here’s a few things to keep in mind:

1) Keep your industry, your clients/customers, your advertising plan in mind.

2) The more unique & distinctive a name, the higher the chances that the name is legally available for use. And the higher the chances of obtaining the trademark.

3) Think of your business as having a personality. What kind of image do you want your business to portray?

Specific brainstorming tips:

Think about what you want but more importantly, think about what you DON’T want. If you don’t want a 3-word name, don’t bother with those. If you don’t want non-English words, don’t bother with those & so on and so forth.

What are the "types" of names you like? Think about words in their simple forms, e.g. adjectives, Latin roots, mythological names, etc. Compile a listing of the types & then seek out resources, such as books or sites, which specialize in those types.

Here are some links where you can do some preliminary name checking:

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=tbmkb6.1.1 — USPTO – Preliminary Search of Federal trademarks
http://biztaxlaw.about.com/od/research/a/Sec_of_state.htm –Go to your state’s Secretary of State page to see if they have a searchable database of business names

http://www.hoovers.com/free/

http://www.thomasnet.com – Must register (free) to search their database

However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first. This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
