is this an ok martingale for a 1 year old GSD that has learned to back out of her collar? if not, could you show me a better quality one?

and could you show me a good website showing me how to fit one properly?
I don’t want to use a head collar. she can get out of those too.

That collar looks flimsy and just bad quality. I use one from PetSmart for all of my dogs, it’s better quality than that one definitely. I wouldn’t pay $10.00 for that collar but the link i am showing you below i’ve paid $10.00 for that collar. Especially for a strong German Shepherd, i would recommend a collar a little stronger than the one you linked to, like the one below.

I have a puppy that can be quite pully, and was thinking of getting her a martingale collar. She’s not a greyhound/whippet, but I’ve heard they can be beneficial on other breeds as well. Has anyone got any experience with these collars, and do they stop pulling? I know she needs training, which she has been getting, but I thought I’d ask for experiences from other people. Thanks.

Dogs learn when they are rewarded for doing something or they are punished for doing something. When it comes to pulling on the leash, they are rewarded when they pull because they get to go where they want. To change this behavior, you need to reward them for doing what you want.

To teach a dog not to pull on the leash, you just need to stop letting the dog pull on the leash! If your dog pulls when he gets to the end of the leash, STOP or even turn around and walk the other way. This will frustrate the dog and he will no longer be rewarded for pulling (the dog does not get what he wants). In fact you are taking it a step further because the dog will actually feel punished because he is not going towards or is even going away from the very thing he wanted! No need for leash corrections or other punitive measures needed.

You should reward your dog when he walks nicely on the leash with praise, treats or even by stopping at a pole or bush that the dog finds interesting. Just be sure that it is on your schedule not the dog’s! Do not be shy with your praise when he is walking nicely, you want the dog to know they are doing what you want, when you want it.

Choke or prong collars do hurt your dog. Also, dogs learn that when the collar is on, they are not able pull but once it is off, they can. That is not effective way of managing your dog.

If you are CONSISENT and DO NOT let the dog pull and REWARD him when he does not pull, the dog will learn to walk with you nicely.

If your dog is too strong you should look into a Gentle Leader Collar or Halti collar which will give you more control over the dog without hurting him. These products will help curb your dogs pulling while you work on training. Either product can be purchased at pet stores or on-line.

If you have continued problems you should look into an positive training class with a dog trainer or take a dog training class at an local shelter, kennel or pet store.

Is a Buckaroo Martingale Choker the same as a breast collar? Or what is a Buckaroo Martingale Choker

It is a breast collar. They are the same thing. I prefer the term breast collar though.

i just bought a martingale collar for my cavalier king charles spaniel for training but i think its two big for her because the two sides meet each other when you pull on it will this martingale collar be useless and uneffective or will it still work properly????
also i cannot adjust the lenght of it but the total length is 13 inches she is aabout the size of a maltese
also i cannot adjust the lenght of the collar itself but the total length is 13 inches. my dog is the size of a maltese

Put the collar on over her head. Then you adjust the collar while it’s on her neck. If you can’t adjust it anymore and the sides meet, then yes, it is too big.

They are GREAT collars. All 5 of my dogs wear them.

Try Creative Designworks (http://www.cdwplus.com/index.html). You won’t be able to buy sliders for just one collar, the smallest number you can get is 5, but they have just about the best prices for small quantities of hardware. I usually buy my dog collar hardware from them. Also, Strapworks (http://www.strapworks.com/Solid_Brass_s/27.htm) will sell hardware individually (you can buy as few as one) but if you’re only making one collar and you don’t need any nylon (their webbing is excellent!) you’ll probably pay more for shipping than you would from Creative Designworks.

where on the dog do you measure and does it matter on the kind of links on it like large or small?

Most of the pet store will let you bring your dog in, so take him with you and have one of the stores associates help measure your dog.
