I have a puppy that can be quite pully, and was thinking of getting her a martingale collar. She’s not a greyhound/whippet, but I’ve heard they can be beneficial on other breeds as well. Has anyone got any experience with these collars, and do they stop pulling? I know she needs training, which she has been getting, but I thought I’d ask for experiences from other people. Thanks.
Dogs learn when they are rewarded for doing something or they are punished for doing something. When it comes to pulling on the leash, they are rewarded when they pull because they get to go where they want. To change this behavior, you need to reward them for doing what you want.
To teach a dog not to pull on the leash, you just need to stop letting the dog pull on the leash! If your dog pulls when he gets to the end of the leash, STOP or even turn around and walk the other way. This will frustrate the dog and he will no longer be rewarded for pulling (the dog does not get what he wants). In fact you are taking it a step further because the dog will actually feel punished because he is not going towards or is even going away from the very thing he wanted! No need for leash corrections or other punitive measures needed.
You should reward your dog when he walks nicely on the leash with praise, treats or even by stopping at a pole or bush that the dog finds interesting. Just be sure that it is on your schedule not the dog’s! Do not be shy with your praise when he is walking nicely, you want the dog to know they are doing what you want, when you want it.
Choke or prong collars do hurt your dog. Also, dogs learn that when the collar is on, they are not able pull but once it is off, they can. That is not effective way of managing your dog.
If you are CONSISENT and DO NOT let the dog pull and REWARD him when he does not pull, the dog will learn to walk with you nicely.
If your dog is too strong you should look into a Gentle Leader Collar or Halti collar which will give you more control over the dog without hurting him. These products will help curb your dogs pulling while you work on training. Either product can be purchased at pet stores or on-line.
