I replaced my dogs choke chain with a nylon martingale dog collar. She likes it better then the choke chain. I put it on her so it wont choke her when she pulls hard and i can still pull it off her. Is that the right way to use it?

I use the martingales with the fabric or leather collar and the chain triangle bit where you attach the lead to the ring. I’ve been using them for 10 years.

I love martingales. No messing around with buckles to put the collar on and take it off, just slip it over the head. It’s easy to get a perfect fit so the dog can’t pull backwards out of the collar and it’s always loosely comfortable around their neck unless they pull.

It sounds like you’re using it the right way.

ADD: Martingales come in all widths, not just wide ones for sight hounds. I use tiny ones for my Cavaliers, not because the dogs pull but because the collars have no buckles to fiddle around with.

Bind off stitches between the beginning / end of the row / round and markers, leaving the 2/3 of the stiches live on the needle.
Dont understand how far to bind off.

Did you put the markers in where they said to do so? If so, go from the marker to the end of the row or from the beginning of the row to the marker. Not having seen the pattern, I can only guess this is for the "armholes" or some other shaping. It sounds like you check your work by counting your stitches. You should have 2/3 of your stitches left after your binding off. (Example only: If you had 60 stitches, that would be 20. You’d bind off two lots of 10 stitches each, leaving 40 stitches on the needles. 40 is 2/3 of 60.)

IF YOU DID NOT put in the markers where they said to, count carefully and do your binding off mathematically. Divide by three, then divide one of the thirds in half. Bind off that many from each end.

0 Toronto Travel Discoveries Funky stores on Queen Street WestYesterday I went to do a video/photo tour of Toronto’s historic Gladstone Hotel that included an interview with owner / renovator and artist Christina Zeidler. Always curious I wanted to get a feel for the neighbourhood surrounding the hotel which is wedged in between West Queen West and Parkdale. This area is an interesting study of local history and sociology. A neighbourhood in transition, it has for many years been a lower income area with significant social problems. Today the neighbourhood is revitalizing, and new housing developments and loft conversions are going up all over the place. The grittier past now coexists with the brighter future.

Dozens of new cafes, galleries and funky boutiques have sprung up in the neighbourhood and I enjoyed a little walkaround along Queen Street West. I stopped in for lunch at CafĂ© BernatĂ©, a nice little lunch place almost opposite the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health that features 30 sandwiches with wonderful ingredients such a French brie, avocado, artichoke hearts, asparagus – the kind of foods that make my mouth water.

On the way home I stopped off on the CNE Grounds and took some shots of the Princes’ Gates and the Automotive Buildings, two outstanding architectural examples of the Roaring Twenties. The Princes’ Gates (often mistakenly called the “Princess Gates”) were officially opened on August 31, 1927 by the two princes Edward, Prince of Wales and Prince George. Edward later became King Edward VIII. The statue at the top is called the “Goddess of Winged Victory”. Today’s statue is actually a copy made of plastic polymer since the original statue was replaced in 1987 because it had seriously deteriorated.

I also took some pictures of the entrance area of the Automotive Building which was constructed in 1929. Many typical Art Deco details adorn the entrance area of this building whose original purpose was to display the latest car models to the public. Today it is used for a wide variety of exhibitions, and the “Farm, Food and Fun” event is hosted here every year.

My quest for the hidden architectural and historical jewels of Toronto continues…..
